Rather than sit around and wait for the next Mr. Perfect to
call me, I ventured out into the world to discover simple
self-fulfilling, self-gratifying, surround-sound
entertainment. I have since jumped out of that perfectly
good airplane, have been head-butted by a shark, learned to
fly on a trapeze, gone hang gliding and driven racecars.
I’ve learned to slam a golf ball the length of a
fairway rather than the width of one and have even learned
how to stir macrobiotic food in a North-South direction. It
hasn’t been easy, but What’s a Girl to
Do?™
Three Christmases ago I left California, bound for the
Maldives on what was to have been a simple, 9-day location
story for Sport Diver. After completing my assignment, I
flew to Sri Lanka for a little shopping and R&R. I
returned to California seven months later!
During that first visit I fell madly for everything Sri
Lankan and stayed on because I could not stop taking
photographs of the children with their giant,
black-as-night eyes, of the Buddhist monks with their dark
skin contrasting against their brilliant orange robes, the
muscled arms of low-country drummers as they held a beat
all night long, the ancient ruins of long ago kings, baby
elephants hiding from the scorching sun in shadows cast by
the hulk of their mothers and pristine beaches where one
should fall in love – the many wonders of this tiny
island.
My column What’s a Girl to Do™ and various
features have appeared in Coast Magazine, American
Magazine, Sport Diver, and recently in the Montecito
Journal. Sarvodaya Vishva Lekha will soon publish a book of
my photographs of Sri Lanka.
