Portraits
One of my personal favorites is of best friends Chamu and
Medu. Their grandfather stood on his front porch, dressed
in a white shirt and blue sarong – a formidable
figure with his hands folded on his protruding stomach as
he instructed the girls to stand up straight and put on
their best faces for the foreigner. I couldn’t
understand his directions, as he was speaking Sinhala, but
I saw the results. Each girl went from giggling,
handholding 4-year-olds to stiff mannequins waiting for the
shutter to capture their obedient behavior. I politely had
to tell their grandfather to “Shuss.” Once he
did, the girls went back to being girls and I caught this
shot.
